u must cut it.. or if still new maybe it can recover itself
As above and what remedies to cure? Thanks.
Bro
In this condition, the gill cover of the arowana curl outward, initially involving only the solf part of the cover and later the hard gill cover. If the cause is not removed, condition will get worst, gill will get exposed, causing breathing difficulty and making the gill prone to infection. The end result could be fetal.
Possible Causes Diagnosis Treatment
Small swimming space -Tankof size with length and width shorter then 2.5x and 1x the length of the fish.
-Fish has to "reverse" on turning -Move the fish to a larger tank
Poor water condition -Check ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate -Large water change
-Increase dissolved O2(add airstone)
-Increase water current
-message gill cover back(if fish allow)
-operation(if above failed)
When only the soft portionof the gill cover is involve and problem noticed early, conservative management might be possible. However, when the hard portion of the gill cover is involved, the condition is not reversible without surgery. Surgery is done under analgesia. The curled portion of the gill is either trimmed out or multiple pependicular(toward head) cuts is made on it.
There is a 3rd hypothesis on the cause of gill curl. Infection of the inner membrane is believed to be the cause in this hypothesis. Infection cause the inner membrane to swell and push the gill to curl outward(just like wetting the sticky side of stamp). More research is needed to prove this hypothesis.

thanks for sharing..........just add one point.....for just soft curl gill, add salt to 1.5%, increase temp by adding heater, increase aeration too:)
The main causes of opened gills can be : genetics, lack of DO (dissolved oxygen), and high TAN (Total Ammonia Nitrogen : Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate), and lastly salinity.
Incease aeration and avoid overstocking. Maintain water quality all the time. Remember that fish do not produce waste to the water, it is the food and the feeding that produce the waste to the water. If you don't believe me try not to feed your fish and check the quality of the water. Well, your fish my die because there is not food though....ehhehehe
Therefore, try to feed your fish wisely and of course remember the ability of your filter to recycle the water. Bigger fillter will allow you to feed more to you fish.
Remember also not to put solid salt straight away to the water close to your fish will create this problem. Therefore, try to dissolve the salt before you put it in the system.
Hope that helps.

If aro is quite big, how to operate the gill? Any bro here can share the step by step? Thanks.
Things to be prepared:
1. Plastic bag (aro size).
2. Fish anesthetic / fish stabilizer.
3. Wet towel.
4. Sharp scissor.
5. Yellow medication powder.
First:
Put the aro in the plastic bag or reduce the aquarium water up to the height of aro (the purpose is to minimized the amount of anesthetic used).
Second:
Put some anesthetic (Fish Stabilizer) little by little until aro swimming upside down. Pre-mix anesthetic with little bit of water before pouring to aro container. Direct contact can damage aro scales.
Third:
Take aro out of water and put it on the wet towel on the operation table.
Fourth:
Cut the excess gill (curling gill) using sharp scissors.
Fifth:
Put back the aro in the aquarium (that does not contain anesthetic) with lot of oxygen. The aro should wake up in a few minutes. Put some yellow powder medication to avoid infection.
Note:
Surgery should be done fast and put back the aro into fresh water.

It's depends on how old your aro..... If your aro is still young its should cure by itself and can rely on medications to do the work. But if your aro had get older its must went to surgery procedure from the expert:thumbs_up: ..... I hope it will help
