Got a 10 month old Silver Arowana that doesn't have much of an appetitie lately. It's in a 155 bow/overflow with 1200 gph trickle and two 350 canisters with spray bars. The amonia, nitrate, nitrite is always good. I do 30-40% water changes every week/week and a half. His gills are not curled, however he does seem to "breathe" heavy... (opening his mouth a lot) but does not frequently gulp air. I've also tried adding salt to the water in the past with no results.
He'll go up to a week and a half with out eating... He's in with a few other guys, some large clown loaches, large silver dollars and a 3 1/2 foot fire eel and some others. They all get along great.
I feed the fire eel and the arrowana commercial shrimp that you can get in any frozen food section of the grocery store. I've had Arowana's in the past that have had no problem with this diet. FYI... occationally when he's being finnicky I will put a couple of gold fish in the tank, but he won't touch them. I've had a giant danio in there for over 5 months... I put a 100 in as feeders and he finished them all off a long time ago except for this last one. I feed both the fire eel and the arrowana buy hand using a prong made out of clothes hanger... the fire ell gups the food down like crazy and comes up to the top of the tank to be fed. I cut the shrimp into about 1/3" slices for the eel and in half (1/2") for the Arowana. When hungry (once a week or so) the Arrowana also takes the shrimp of the prong.
I only feed my fish every 3 days. I fill the eel and Arrowana up til they don't want anymore and also feed black worms from Calif. to the loaches and others...
any suggestions on what might be going on with this Arowana is appreciated... this has been going on for a couple of months now. As previously stated, he'll go for as long as a week and a half before eating some shrimp.
