i use KL just for stress fish or just move to new tank it will help fish to recover from stress.. KL will affect Ph but lowering Ph in the tank, you will need a lot amount of KL

I uses KL for my SR but I only added to my tank after WC on a monthly basis. The KL is soaked in the for 3-4 days and it will be removed. The color will gradually disappeared after 3 weeks. Sometime I will add Tetra Blackwater instead.

I use K leaves usually after heavy water change of more than 30% and will remove them after 3 days.
It will calm the fish and it helps to reduce PH.

My Rtg once regained its appetite after I added K leaves for 3 days but I'm not sure if it is due to the effect K leaves or not? Anyone experience this before?:what:

I have to agree with you statement as my SR wasn't eating for more than a week until a dump in a few KL and it start eating like never eaten before. Those Bros & Siss having trouble feeding your Aro should try this as it is more effective than BW.

I don't use K leaves, but use black water extracts from Totto. I find the leaves not strong enough to make the water brown, and it looks funny having a bag of leaves floating around the tank.

The PH is stable as long as you have corals to maintain a stable buffer range for your water. So not a problem for my tank.

I started adding black water only because the LFS said it will help with my tanning of the SR from Wajok. But after reading your comments on NAN lights not being effective, I may have to look for TFC lights now.

You can also use peat from garden centre (make sure no chemicals or fertiliser have been added) and put it in a stocking from your GF. Put stocking bag in filter or if you want float in aging water and mix this extract in with your water change water - 1%, 5% or whatever you like after checking colour, PH.

Henryow, I understand that some people say that even though fish can't see red colour (is this true?) that the natural stronger red colours on fish in wild come from the dark tanin stained "black water" which makes the body look darker in this water. This is an adaptation that has evolved because of the environment they live in. So if you simulate this water as much as possible it brings out natural response. I think that a little tannin/extract is a good thing for fish health, but you have to weigh this up with how best to show off the fish/aquarium. I know when I had killifish they looked allot brighter and more active in blackwater after only a short time.

Hi Hendri,

Is there any difference between using normal (top) and underwater lamp as I was told using underwater lamp which distribute more light and is much better for the red arowana than the top lamp.

If these are a type of almond leave they have natural tannens that are in the water of red arowana in lakes where they live in. It is true that it will turn your water brown but is good for arowana and has a calming affect on arowana and will also soften your water

KL, peat, or driftwood will tan, lower the PH, and soften the water. How much it does depend on how strong it's properties are.

I've used all in my tank for SA fish. I like the tan look because it replicates the natural habitat of the fish. It also leech some trace elements that is vital for fish and can help to trigger breeding of some hard to breed species.
